PICK: Both Teams To Score
REASON FOR THIS PREDICTION
England travel to the Czech Republic this week hoping to maintain their perfect start to their Euro 2020 qualification campaign at their host’s expense.
After a sensational set of early performances, Gareth Southgate’s charges have blitzed their way to the top of Group A, playing with an attacking verve that’s proved far too potent for their opponents to handle.
England plundered an eye-watering 19 goals across their opening quartet of group games – a total that makes them the joint highest scorers in qualifying alongside Belgium, having played two games less than Roberto Martinez’ side.
The excellence and consistent quality produced by the Three Lions attacking department hasn’t been reproduced by their counterparts in defence of late however, and England were unable to keep a clean sheet in two of their last three Group A fixtures.
Their penchant for dropping their guard was never more evident than in England’s 5-3 win over Kosovo last month, and while Southgate’s men look good to win in Prague this week, their lapses in concentration at the back should let the Czech Republic in for a consolation.
The Czechs are England’s closest challengers in Group A, though they trail the section leaders by three points having played one game more.
The Czech Republic have averaged just under two goals per game in their qualification fixtures to date, and finding a way to get on the scoresheet has become something of a trademark for the country under the direction of Jaroslav Šilhavý, despite some up and down results.
Having scored at least once in 16 of their last 20 international matches, it’s clear that the Czech Republic have players in their squad that can open defences and finish chances, and we expect them to grab a goal against England this week.
With the factors at play considered, we think that backing both teams to score is the best avenue of approach for this week’s game, though we expect England to ultimately triumph.
The Three Lions showed their superior quality and class in the reverse Group A fixture between the teams at Wembley in March, hitting five goals without reply past the Czechs in a one-sided battering in London.
The Czech Republic are a tougher nut to crack at home however, losing only three times in their last 13 matches on their own patch since June 2016. In two of those defeats, the Czechs only just lost out to 2-1 to Germany and the Ukraine respectively, displaying the kind of doggedness that England should expect to face this week.
The narrow nature of those defeats and the Czech Republic’s respectably overall record at home suggests that England’s margin of victory this week is unlikely to be quite as emphatic as their win at Wembley. With that in mind, we’re tipping England to finish as 2-1 victors in Prague.
